How Personal Finance Coaching Starts: Real Talk, Real Goals, Real Progress

🕐 Read Time 5 Minutes

Talking about money can feel about as comfortable as discussing your most embarrassing middle school moments. If you've made it to the point where you're considering personal finance coaching, you're already ahead of the game. You've recognized that your relationship with money could use some professional intervention, and that takes guts.

So what exactly happens when you finally take the plunge and book that first session? What do you bring? Will you be judged? Are you going to leave the session with a budget that says no more takeout, no more Target runs, and no more fun?

Take a breath. This isn’t that kind of meeting—and we aren’t that kind of coach. Here’s exactly what to expect in your first personal coaching session, no stiff suits or spreadsheets required.

What is a Financial Coach?

Before we dive into your first session, let’s get something straight: a financial coach is not the same thing as a financial advisor.

We're not here to sell you investment products, make stock picks, or overhaul your 401(k). A financial coach is your financial accountability partner, educator, and cheerleader—all rolled into one vibrant, budget-loving human.

A financial coach is a trained professional who helps you take control of your finances by working with you to create realistic budgets, tackle debt, build savings, and develop healthy money habits. Unlike financial advisors who focus primarily on investments and wealth management, financial coaches dig into the nitty-gritty of your daily financial life.

We're the ones helping you figure out why you keep overspending and how to finally stick to that budget you've been meaning to create for the past three years.

We help you:

  • Understand your cash flow (what’s coming in, what’s leaking out)

  • Create a plan that aligns with your real life—not some fantasy budget you’ll ditch in a week

  • Build better money habits

  • Explore your financial mindset and rewrite the stories you’ve been telling yourself about money (you know, the ones that say “I’m bad with money” or “I’ll never get out of debt”)

The best part? Financial coaches meet you where you are, not where some generic financial guru thinks you should be. Making six figures but still living paycheck to paycheck? We've seen it. Scared to look at your bank account? Been there. Ready to finally get your act together, but don't know where to start? That's literally our specialty.

Personal Finance Coaching: What Happens in Session 1

Let’s discuss your first official session. It’s a 75-minute virtual meeting (yes, you can wear yoga pants), and it’s all about getting the complete picture of you.

Here’s what we’ll cover:

1. Your Current Financial Situation

We’ll start by looking at what’s going on in your world right now:

  • Income

  • Expenses

  • Savings (or lack thereof—no shame here)

  • Debt

  • What systems, if any, you’re currently using (YNAB? Spreadsheets? Mental math + panic?)

There's no need to have all the numbers perfectly prepped. Think of this as bringing everything out of the closet so we can figure out what fits and what needs to be discarded.

2. Your Goals

Short-term, long-term, and even the secret ones you’ve never said out loud. We’ll talk through your vision for your financial life. Your vision might include buying your dream home, building a six-figure savings account, or simply not holding your breath every time the credit card bill shows up.

We’ll also discuss what “financial freedom” looks like for you because it’s different for everyone.

3. Your Relationship with Money

Here’s where things get juicy. We’ll dig into your money mindset, childhood messages, patterns, and emotions tied to finances. If you’ve ever said, “I make good money, so why am I always broke?”, this is where we unpack that.

We don’t believe in just slapping a budget on a broken system. We want to understand the system first and then work together to fix it in a way that feels doable.

Why Session 1 Matters So Much

This first meeting sets the tone for everything else.

We’re not here to fix your entire financial life in one session (if only it were that easy!). But we are here to start building a strong foundation. A foundation rooted in your values, goals, and unique money story.

Some clients walk away from the session feeling relieved. Some feel a little raw (money can stir up big emotions). Others feel fired up and ready to create real change. There’s no right or wrong reaction.

You’ll also walk away with:

  • A clearer understanding of where your money is going

  • Your top financial priorities outlined

  • A coaching roadmap customized to your life, not someone else’s

Beyond Session 1: What’s Next?

While we're focusing on the first session in this post, know that the full coaching process goes deep:

  • Month 2: We help you implement your new budget, create better habits, and start tackling debt (if applicable).

  • Month 3: We work on your mindset, bust limiting beliefs, and continue aligning spending with your values.

  • Month 4 and beyond: We focus on long-term planning—saving for big goals, preparing for emergencies, tracking net worth, and building sustainable wealth.

You’ll receive ongoing support through email, Voxer (yep, it’s like walkie-talkies for grown-ups), and regular accountability check-ins.

We’ll also talk about the life stuff—planning for kids, negotiating salaries, how to save for that dreamy two-week trip to Italy, and still hit your financial goals.

Bonus Topics on the Table

Every client is unique, and so are their money questions. Some extra topics we could cover in continuous coaching sessions include:

  • Budgeting for business owners (because, yes, your company card needs some love, too)

  • FIRE strategies (if early retirement is your jam)

  • Salary negotiations, side hustles, and income growth

  • Planning for major milestones—weddings, vacations, home renovations, all the fun stuff

  • Teaching children about money so you can raise little financial geniuses (or at least kids who understand “no” at the toy aisle)

If you’re a small business owner who needs business coaching, we can also cover that. Check out our blog on business financial coaching to learn what that can look like.
