Ring In The New Year With A Superb Spending Plan

As we bring 2018 to a close, it’s time to reflect on what we did great, what we could have done better and what we will set our sights on for 2019.

It’s said that a DREAM written down with a date becomes a GOAL. A GOAL broken down into steps becomes a PLAN. A PLAN backed by ACTION becomes REALITY.

Think of your budget as your plan. Following your budget will help make your dreams a reality. So go back to the beginning and think about your financial dreams, and let’s make that plan for January to start taking the appropriate steps to get there. Don’t forget about the following 8 things when creating your plan (aka budget).

1. Gym Membership - Who doesn’t make a New Year’s Resolution to lose weight and go to the gym?! Don’t forget to budget in for a membership if that’s your plan. Consider other options as well, such as online fitness programs that are a portion of a gym membership or buying used equipment for your home from Craigslist or Facebook Marketplace.

2. Taxes and Advisor Fees - It’s also that time of year that you’ll be receiving your W-2’s and wanting or needing to get your taxes done. If you’re an early bird who likes to get them done ASAP, then don’t forget about budgeting for your tax professional. Using a professional can often save you time, headaches, money and you’ll be sure that it’s done right. If you typically owe on your taxes, make sure to start putting some money aside now.

If you’re a business owner, you probably pay quarterly estimated taxes, and here’s your friendly reminder that they’re due January 15th.

3. Vacation - There’s no better time than to start thinking or preparing for your summer vacation. If you start saving now with a sinking fund, you’ll be able to enjoy that vacation more this summer knowing it’s paid for in cash.

4. Things for Organization - Another top New Year’s Resolution is to ‘Get Organized’. If that’s your plan, make sure to set some money aside for containers, racks, shelves, planners, and any items you feel will help you achieve this goal.

6. Christmas - Yes, for 2019!! If you didn’t pay for Christmas with cash this year, make it your #1 goal for 2019. Go through all your receipts from this year and find out how much you spend if you haven’t already. Take that amount and divide it by 11 or 12 and just like that, you’ll have Christmas paid for in cash, with little effort.

7. Higher Utilities - Cold weather brings higher electric bills for some and natural gas for others. In our lucky case, it brings about both! Thank goodness for budget billing, but if you don’t use it, make sure your plan accordingly.

8. Pet License - If your state or county requires a new pet license every year, it’s likely due this month.

By creating a spending plan before the month begins, you’ll feel more in control of your money and you’ll have more left over at the end of the month! If you’re still not sure how to get started, click here to set up your FREE introductory coaching session to see how I can help!
